Eureste Seeks Second Term on Defiance Council

Democrat Joe Eureste has filed his petition, seeking a second term on Defiance City Council as an at-large councilman.
Eureste is finishing his initial term as a councilman since running and being elected in 2001. He is no stranger to politics, having previously served two terms on the Defiance City Board of Education starting with his first term in 1994. He was elected board president in 1996.
"The reason I am running for re-election is because I still enjoy public service," he said. "I have been involved in serving our community as a volunteer for several decades. For the past 11 years, I have been fortunage and honored to serve our city as an elected public servant. Since taking office in 2002, I have found city government to be a challenge. As a member of city council, I have made the tough decisions that were needed to help balance our city budget during our distressed economic times.
"My goal if re-elected is to pursue legislative issues that help to improve our community landscape, promote our business climate, developp strategies to improve our quality of life and set priorities to preserve the health and safety of our city."
Eureste has been employed at GM Powertrain since graduating from Defiance High School in 1972. As an employee, he pursued a college education, attending Defiance, Adrian and Nortyhwest State Community colleges. In 1980, he was appointed as a GM/UAW benefits plans representative. He has attended numerous professional and leadership programs of his employer and his union affiliation, UAW Local 211.
As a member of council, Eureste serve as chairman of the public utilities, gas and lights committee and is a member of the sewer committee, police and fire committee, tax incentive review council and the traffic commission.
Outside of his council duties, Eureste serves as chairman of the Defiance Area United Auto Workers-Community Action Program (CAP) Council and is a legislative member of the Ohio Economic Development Association. He is also a board member of United Way of Defiance County and the Valentine Theatre Foundation.
Eureste has previously served as a board member of the Defiance Area YMCA, Defiance County/Defiance City School Business Advisory Council, Defiance 2000 Mentoring Program and Junior Achievement of Northwest Ohio; been the president of Defiance Athletic Boosters, vice president of Women and Family Services; and was a head coach of Defiance Junior High's seventh-grade football team.
Eureste and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, Barney and Jason.
